Fortify and Grow Podcast - Episode 1 Transcript

Hi, welcome to Fortify and Grow Podcast, and I’m so glad you’re here.

This is episode one.

And in case you don’t know me, I’m Krystal Burke, and I am the founder of Fortify Coaching and Consulting.

My passion, more than anything, is to grab hold of those women who are feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and burned out to find sustainable ways of living.

I love to help teach them how to be strengthened and how to have fortitude.

There was a period of time in my life for about 10 years where I was just living in that exhaustion and burnout.

And I always thought that it was kind of like going to the gym.

Like if you just push through and just keep going, that you’ll get used to having to deal with all the stress and overwhelm.

And I thought, you know, if I’m just going to like lift these weights every day and push through, it’s going to feel easier, and I’m going to be able to deal with all life throws at me.

And what I didn’t realize is that’s actually the opposite way of dealing with it.

What we need is to actually have fortitude.

And so I want to share the definition with you because when I found out about this, I was just like so thrilled because this is just such a perfect vision of what it looks like to get out of this exhaustion and burnout cycles in our life.

So here’s the definition.

Having the strength of mind that allows one to endure the current pain or adversity with courage, while having the power to attack, which is an awesome offensive approach, or to resist attack, which is a defensive approach.

Because so many times we just feel like we’re in survival mode, right?

And you’re just putting fires out all day.

You got these big emotions because things just feel like too much.

And we’re just checking off to-do lists, trying to get them to get lower.

And they just never do, right?

Like the to-do list is never ending.

And there’s so many people we’re caring for, whether it be our kids, or our parents, or our spouse, or heaven forbid that we need care, right?

That there’s just so many responsibilities these days that it just feels like too much.

And so what it looks like to have fortitude is to be able to have this both offensive and defensive approach to life.

So in light of this topic of fortitude, I want you for a moment just to picture a castle, okay?

This is just the coolest picture of what having fortitude looks like, okay?

So a castle has an offensive and defensive aspects to it, okay?

So it’s got the moat around the castle, probably some scary alligators in there, and it’s got the drawbridge that allows the path in and out to be taken away, or it to become this wall fortress that it just cannot be broken open.

There’s usually holes in the walls of the castle that allow for guns, ammunition, weapons to be either thrown or catapulted out or shot out.

And so there’s these different aspects.

One of my favorites is just the lookout area, okay?

Because in the lookout area, you can see far, right?

Like you can see who’s attacking you, how many people are attacking you, what kind of ammunition they have.

You can see if anybody else is coming in the distance, maybe either to bring help or supplies, or if maybe you’re just kind of all alone and think of it.

Also, you can see where they are attacking the castle from.

So you can see if a lot of them are congregated in one area, maybe you can make a plan of lowering the drawbridge while they’re distracted over here.

And then you can attack them in certain areas.

And this picture is so much like how our life is, because when we feel like our life is like a battle, like things are coming at us, all these responsibilities, not like the enemy as in like people, but it feels like a battle to deal with all these responsibilities and feel like we’re not drowning, right?

We wanna be able to have this offensive and defensive approach to life because life is hard, but if we’re able to sustain and take care of ourselves in the midst of it and have fortitude.

We’re gonna be able to handle what life comes at us.

And so another one of my passions behind all of this is really just this idea that there’s an enemy out there that wants us to be so busy and so worn out that we never get to what God is calling us to.

And it’s that, or it could be, yes, I’m doing what God has called me to do, but I’m doing it in a way that is so unsustainable, that is sucking all of the joy and life out of this thing that God created for me.

And it really can take away all of the energy and life-giving aspects of our purpose.

And so we don’t want the enemy to be able to steal the joy and the excitement and the passion of life from us.

And so we need to come up with different ways of living our life so that we don’t have to give up doing the things that are most important to us.

We don’t need to give up being a mom the way that we want to parent.

And we don’t have to give up and settle for just, you know, not being able to do the things that are most important to us.

And so when we are able to live a life that includes fortitude, we’re able to do the things that are most important to us.

Not absolutely everything that we want to do, but the things that are absolutely most important to us.

The things that God is calling you to in this season.

And we will always have enough time to do the things that God has called us to in this season.

And so join me as we just have a ton of guests that bring insights into what it looks like to find rest in the midst of the chaos and peace in the midst of our busy seasons.

I hope this is just such a fun, encouraging time for you.

I hope it is filled with laughter and learning.

I am going to be learning right alongside of you from all of the people that will be on this episode, on these episodes.

And I just hope that you are filled with encouragement and joy and fortitude.
